FTM: Passing

Before surgery, many FTM trans* people will undergo other procedures to give the appearance of being male. The most common are:

  • Chest binding: While some don’t bind and prefer to slump or hunch (though this can be bad for posture), others will bind to produce the appearance of a male chest. Often compression shirts or vests are used though, depending on size, tight fabric wrapped around the chest may also have a similar effect.
  • Packing: creating the appearance of a “bulge” (appearance of male genitalia through clothing).
  • Stand-to-pee devices: devices which allow trans* men to stand when peeing

It is best to talk to other trans* men to get advice about what materials, etc. are best.
